You can't fix what's broken...

If your tools are also broken.

Democracy is backsliding and it was our tool for group decision-making and problem-solving.

But it was taken for granted and corrupted.

The Civics Factor is about exploring what's needed to fix the broken tools of politics and highlight ways we can prevent collapse.

So far, democracy can still be saved

But it won't be from one or two changes to laws. It will be from reforming and innovating in three key dynamics:

  • How citizens are educated;

  • How the media is funded and reports news; and

  • How political parties compete for votes

Progress is neither permanent nor inevitable

It has to be fought for.

The Civics Factor is about focusing down on pressure points.

We must deal with the broken, corrupted ecosystem of citizen, journalist, and party.

The death of democracy is not likely to be an assassination from ambush. It will be a slow extinction from apathy, indifference, and undernourishment.”

About the Host

Mark’s an external thinker.

Mark’s values are compassion, community, connection, and wanting people to lead healthy, happy lives where they can make as much of their potential as they want to flourish and be free.

So Mark rarely has strong political opinions unless he’s sure they align with his values. All else is a matter of dialogue.

Mark thinks modern political culture has been–perhaps fatally–altered by generations of Cold War propaganda that hardened people’s identities around political opinions instead of their values.

And yes he microdoses.

Join Mark as he ADHD’s his way to find and distill knowledge from some of the most thoughtful people on a range of ideas and tools that could be used to prevent collapse or prepare for its aftermath.
